Efudex drug description and what Efudex is used to treat

A pyrimidine analog, Efudex is an antineoplastic medication. It is used to treat colon, rectal, breast, stomach and pancreatic cancer, multiple actinic (solar) keratoses and superficial basal cell carcinoma. It is also purchased as a palliative treatment for advanced colorectal cancer. Its mechanism of action is to inhibit DNA and RNA synthesis. It is dispensed in three different forms. In 1% and 5% cream, in 50mg/ml injection and in 1%, 2% and 5% topical solution forms.

For colorectal, breast, stomach and pancreatic cancers, the initial dose of Efudex for adults is 12 mg/kg intravenous daily for 4 days; if no toxicity is noted, a dose of 6mg/kg is given on the 6th , 8th, 10th and 12th day. It has a maintenance dose of 10 to 15 mg/kg. Dose is based on the actual weight but may be adjusted in obese persons and in those who experience water retention.

For treatment of early breast cancer, adult initial dose is 600 mg/m2 intravenously on days 1 and 8 of each cycle combined with cyclophosphamide 100 mg/m2 on days 1 through 14 days of each cycle. It usually lasts for 6 to 12 months with 2 weeks rest period between cycles. Dose is adjusted to those older than 60 years old.
