Your doctor may have suggested Sotacor for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking Sotacor, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking Sotacor without consulting your doctor.
                  How should I use Sotacor?
The recommended adult dose of sotalol ranges from 80 mg twice daily to 160 mg twice daily taken every 12 hours. Sotalol is best taken one to two hours before meals. The dose is usually started at the lower range and increased gradually according to the doctor's instructions until the best dose is determined.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones given here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.
It is very important that Sotacor be taken on a regular schedule as prescribed by the doctor. If you miss a dose of Sotacor take it as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and carry on with your regular schedule. Do not double doses.

Are there any other precautions or warnings for Sotacor?
Breathing problems: People with asthma and certain other breathing problems should not take sotalol.
Diabetes: The signs of low blood sugar may not be as noticeable when taking sotalol. People with diabetes who take insulin or other medications that work by reducing blood sugar levels should be cautious and monitor blood sugar carefully while taking Sotacor.
Electrolyte levels: People with low potassium or magnesium levels should not use sotalol until these imbalances are corrected, as these conditions can create higher risk for abnormal heart rhythms with the use of Sotacor.
Hyperthyroidism (high level of thyroid hormones): People with hyperthyroidism should use caution while taking sotalol, as it may reduce the symptoms of this condition, giving a false impression of improvement. Stopping the medication suddenly could worsen hyperthyroidism.
Kidney function: Sotalol passes from the body via the kidneys. It should therefore be used with caution by people with reduced kidney function.
Severe allergies: People with allergies severe enough to cause anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction where swelling of the face, lips, and throat make it difficult to breathe) should talk to their doctor about what to do if they have an allergic reaction. Sotalol may make it more difficult to treat their allergic reaction with epinephrine.
Stopping the medication: Do not suddenly stop taking Sotacor. Consult your doctor about how to safely stop taking Sotacor.
Surgery: If you are scheduled for surgery, inform all doctors involved in your care that you are taking sotalol.
Pregnancy: No adequate information exists on the use of sotalol by pregnant women. Sotalol should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk.
Breast-feeding: Sotalol passes into breast milk. Therefore, do not use Sotacor while breast-feeding.
Children and adolescents: The safety and effectiveness of using sotalol have not been established for children and adolescents under 18 years of age.

If you are taking any medications containing this drug, speak with your doctor or pharmacist. Depending on your specific circumstances, your doctor may want you to:
stop taking one of the medications,
change one of the medications to another,
change how you are taking one or both of the medications, or
                  leave everything as is.
An interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. In many cases, interactions are intended or are managed by close monitoring. Speak to your doctor about how any drug interactions are being managed or should be managed.
Medications other than those listed above may interact with Sotacor. Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter (non-prescription) and herbal medications that you are taking. Also tell them about any supplements you take. Since caffeine, alcohol, the nicotine from cigarettes, or illegal drugs can affect the action of many medications, you should let your prescriber know if you use them.
