Is there a difference between a generic drug and a name brand drug?
A generic drug is an exact copy of a brand name drug that has had its patent expire and is produced by drug companies that sometimes only produce generic drugs or produce both name brand and generic. When an original manufacturer of a drug is given a patent they are allowed to be the sole seller of that drug until the patent expires. When a patent expires other manufacturers may sell and/or produce the drug usually under its medical name and it is usually offered at a discount price than their brand name competitors. The reason for a generic drug being priced at a discount compared to the price of name brand drugs is because many of the original costs of producing a drug will go into research and development. These generic drugs are not a cheap substitute as they are an exact replica of the original drug and are just as safe to use as the original. They will contain identical ingredients and have the same dosage and strength as the original drug created by the original manufacturer. Sometimes a generic drug is not available due to various reasons. If there is generic Celestoderm available in Canada and it can be offered for sale by our pharmacy you will see generic Celestoderm listed above. A cheap price on generic medication can save you as much as half price compared to name brand drugs and will give you the same results.
