What is epinephrine injection?

EPINEPHRINE (Epipen) can help to open up air passages and make breathing easier for people with various lung problems such as severe asthma. Epinephrine also treats extremely severe allergic reactions and certain heart problems. Generic epinephrine injections are available. Generic auto-injector devices are not yet available.

What should my health care professional know before I receive epinephrine?

They need to know if you have any of the following conditions:
•blood vessel disease
•brain damage or disease
•diabetes
•glaucoma
•heart disease
•high blood pressure
•over active thyroid
•an unusual or allergic reaction to epinephrine, sulfites, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
•pregnant or trying to get pregnant
•breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?

Epinephrine is for injection under the skin, into a muscle or into a vein. Injections can be given by a health care professional in a clinic or hospital setting. An auto-injector form is available for self-administration by patients who suffer a severe allergic response to certain stimuli. Read the directions carefully so that you will know how to use the auto-injector properly. Do not remove the safety cap until you are ready to use the auto-injector. When you need to use it, remove the gray cap. Place the black tip on the thigh at a right angle to your leg. Press the tip hard into your leg until the automatic injection functions. Hold in place for several seconds and then remove and safely throw away. Massage your leg for 10 seconds. Do not use more often than directed.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses.

What drug(s) may interact with epinephrine?

•beta-blockers, often used for high blood pressure or heart problems
•bromocriptine
•entacapone
•heart medicine (such as digoxin, digitoxin)
•linezolid
•medicines for colds and breathing difficulties
•medicines for hay fever and other allergies
•medicines for high blood pressure
•medicines for mental depression
•medicines for migraine
•medicines for mental problems and psychotic disturbances
•medicines that make the uterus contract
•thyroid hormones
•tolcapone

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including nonprescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check before starting or stopping any of your medicines.

What side effects may I notice from receiving epinephrine?

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
•difficulty breathing, wheezing
•flushing (reddening of the skin)
•irregular heartbeats, palpitations, or chest pain
•numbness in fingers or toes
•skin rash, hives
•swelling of the face
•vomiting

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
•anxiety or nervousness
•dry mouth
•drowsiness or dizziness
•headache
•increased sweating
•nausea
•weakness or tiredness

What should I watch for while taking epinephrine?

Check with your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve within 20 minutes of epinephrine use, or if they get worse.

Keep an auto-injector handy if you need epinephrine ready for use to combat possible severe allergic reactions. Make sure that you have the phone number of your prescriber or health care professional and local hospital ready. Remember to check the expiration date regularly and replace the auto-injector when it becomes outdated.

Do not use epinephrine products if you are pregnant, especially during labor, as epinephrine may delay contractions.

If you have diabetes, epinephrine may increase your blood sugar. Check your blood sugar often and contact your prescriber or health care professional if you have any problems.

Do not use an epinephrine solution that appears cloudy, pinkish, or brownish.

Do not treat yourself for coughs, colds or allergies without checking with your prescriber or health care professional. Nonprescription medicines may contain ingredients that will increase the effects of your medicine.

Where can I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F) unless otherwise indicated by the manufacturer. Protect from light. Store the suspension form of epinephrine injection in a refrigerator between 2 and 8 degrees C (36 and 46 degrees F); do not freeze. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
