How does Gonal work? What will it do for me?
Gonal alpha belongs to the class of medications called gonadotropins. It is a synthetic version of naturally occurring follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland that helps egg development in the ovaries. Gonal alpha is used as a fertility medication by women who have not been able to become pregnant as a result of problems with ovulation. Gonal alpha works by helping women develop eggs in the ovaries. It is also used by women taking part in fertility clinics in assisted reproductive technology procedures (e.g., in vitro fertilization).

How should I use Gonal?
The recommended dose of Gonal alpha varies according to individual circumstances. The goal of treatment is to use the lowest dose that will be expected to achieve good results.
Doses may range between 75 IU to 450 IU (international units) over the course of treatment. For induction of ovulation, treatment is usually started at a dose of 75 IU once a day with an adjustment of dose by up to 37.5 IU considered by the doctor after 14 days, and then every 7 days after that. One course of treatment should not exceed 35 days under normal circumstances. Intercourse should be attempted at a consistent frequency of at least three times per week. If there is evidence of ovulation but pregnancy does not occur, the regimen is repeated for at least two more courses before the dose is increased to 150 IU per day.
For assisted reproductive technology procedures, treatment is usually started at a dose of 150 IU once a day for 5 days beginning on Day 2 or Day 3 of the menstrual cycle. Your doctor may consider increasing the dose by 75 IU to 150 IU every 3 to 5 days up to a total of 450 IU for up to 5 more days depending on the circumstances. After preparation, Gonal alpha is injected either under the skin (subcutaneous) or into a muscle (intramuscular) as directed.
If you are giving the injection to yourself, be sure you completely understand the proper method of safely preparing and injecting your medication. Once reconstituted, the solution can be stored for a maximum of 28 days at room temperature.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

Gonal alpha is available in injectable form in strengths of 37.5 IU, 75 IU, 150 IU, and 1,200 IU.
37.5 IU: Each single-dose ampul of sterile, lyophilized (freeze-dried) white pellets intended for subcutaneous or intramuscular injection after reconstitution contains FSH activity 37.5 IU.

The following medications may affect how Gonal alpha works or increase the risk of side effects:
