Avodart (Dutasteride)
Avodart is Manufactured by Glaxosmithkline. Dutasteride is "like" Finasteride, (which is more commonly known under the trade names of Proscar and Propecia). These drugs help to prevent testosterone becoming DHT (di-hydro-testosterone), by blocking an enzyme that converts it called; 5-alpha-reductase. However, Finasteride only blocks the specific enzyme known as type-II, whereas Dutasteride blocks both type-I and type-II. This means that Dutasteride is a lot more potent than Finasteride. The first official release for Dutasteride, (like Finasteride), is for the condition of Benign Prostate Hypertrophy, (BPH)- because this condition is also thought to be effected by levels of DHT. However, human trials have been conducted with Dutasteride into men's hair-loss and at 24-weeks, a dose of 0.5mg of Dutasteride was found to be about 33% more effective in the regrowth of hair, when compared to a 5mg dose of Finasteride, (this was measured in a one inch circle, Dutasteride re-growing 96 new hairs compared to 72 with Finasteride). Maximum effects were seen with Dutasteride at a dose of 2.5mg. Dutasteride therefore presents itself as the most potent DHT blocking product currently available, either for Prostate conditions, or hair loss. As can be seen below, the left picture shows the male patient before treatment with Dutasteride, and the right picture is the same male patient after 24-weeks of Dutasteride treatment.
