Why is Diltiazem prescribed?
Diltiazem combines two types of blood pressure medication: an ACE inhibitor (enalapril) and a calcium channel blocker (diltiazem). The ACE inhibitor works by preventing the conversion of a hormone called angiotensin I into a more potent form that constricts the blood vessels and promotes salt and water retention. The calcium channel blocker also works to keep the blood vessels open, and eases the heart's workload by reducing the force and rate of the heartbeat.
Most important fact about Diltiazem
Doctors usually prescribe Diltiazem for patients who have been taking one of its components enalapril (Vasotec) or diltiazem (Cardizem or Dilacor) but haven't shown the desired improvement in blood pressure. Diltiazem isn't prescribed for people newly diagnosed with high blood pressure because the dosage of its two components can't be individually adjusted until the best mix is found.
Like all blood pressure drugs, Diltiazem must be taken regularly to be effective, even if you're feeling well. It does not cure high blood pressure; it merely keeps it under control.
How should you take Diltiazem?
To avoid forgetting a dose, make a habit of taking Diltiazem at the same time each day. The tablets should be swallowed whole; do not break, crush, or chew them. They may be taken with or without food. If you miss a dose...Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at the same time. --Storage instructions...
