Nuheart General Information

Nuheart (ivermectin) is the generic form of the monthly heartworm preventative; Heartgard. An equivalent amount of the active ingredient, ivermectin is found in both Nuheart and the higher priced product; Heartgard. Nuheart tablets are very palatable and manufactured in a meaty flavor. The main difference between Heartgard and Nuheart lies in the fact that Nuheart can be purchased over-the-counter. Unlike Heartgard, no prescription is necessary for the purchase of Nuheart. Most dogs will come to look at the tablet as a flavorful meaty treat. Nuheart is soluble therefore; it can be mixed with a small quantity of water and poured over a dog’s food. Nuheart is approved for use in puppies six weeks of age or older. Nuheart is safe for all breeds of dogs, pregnant dogs, and nursing dogs; as long as the correct dosage is given. Nuheart should never be given to cats. Prior to administering Nuheart to your dog, your veterinarian should conduct a heartworm test. If the results of the test are negative, you may begin giving Nuheart to your dog on a monthly basis. A heartworm test will be needed if your dog has missed six months or more of taking a heartworm preventative. Nuheart can be used for effective heartworm prevention in place of other more expensive monthly preventatives.
