How does carboplatin work? What will it do for me?

Carboplatin belongs to the group of cancer-fighting medicines known as antineoplastics, and specifically to the group of antineoplastics known as platinum-containing compounds. Another platinum-containing compound is cisplatin. Carboplatin prevents the growth of cancer cells by interfering with the genetic material DNA, which is necessary for reproduction of cells. Carboplatin is usually used to treat a particular type of cancer of the ovaries. Your doctor may choose to use carboplatin for other conditions not listed here. If you're unsure why you are taking carboplatin, please ask your doctor.

How should I use carboplatin?

Carboplatin will be injected by the doctor or by someone under direct supervision of the doctor. The recommended dose varies according to body size or kidney function. Carboplatin is available as an intravenous (into the vein) injection. The medication is usually injected through a specially prepared site on the skin. carboplatin is most often given as a single injection (given over 15 to 60 minutes) and may be repeated after at least four weeks depending on response. Your doctor may decide on a dosage schedule different from that described here. Very careful handling of carboplatin is required. It is always administered in a hospital or similar setting with access to sterile equipment for preparation.

As well as interfering with the genetic material DNA of cancer cells, carboplatin can interfere with some of your normal cells. This can cause a number of side effects such as nausea . Keep track of any side effects and report them to your doctor as suggested in the section "What side effects are possible with carboplatin?"

What form(s) does carboplatin come in?

Carboplatin is available as a sterile injectable solution containing carboplatin 10 mg per mL in vial sizes of 5 mL, 15 mL, and 45 mL. Nonmedicinal ingredients include water for injection. The solution should be stored at room temperature and protected from light.

Who should NOT take carboplatin?

Carboplatin should not be used by:

anyone sensitive or allergic to carboplatin or any platinum-containing compounds
people with severely reduced bone marrow function
anyone with bleeding tumours
anyone with a history of severe allergic reaction to mannitol
breast-feeding women

Are there any other precautions or warnings for carboplatin?

Kidneys: This drug should not be given to anyone with severely reduced kidney function unless potential benefits outweigh risks.

Carboplatin and Infection: As well as killing cancer cells, carboplatin can reduce the number of cells that fight infection in the body (white blood cells). Avoid contact with people with contagious infections and tell your doctor if you begin to notice signs of an infection, such as fever or chills.

Carboplatin and Blood clotting: carboplatin can reduce the number of platelet cells in the blood. Platelets help the blood to clot, and a shortage could make you bleed more easily. Tell your doctor of any signs that your blood is not clotting as quickly. Such symptoms may include black and tarry stools, blood in the urine, easy bruising, or cuts that won't stop bleeding.

Carboplatin and Pregnancy: There is a possibility of birth defect if either the male or female is using carboplatin at the time of conception, or if it is taken during pregnancy. Effective birth control should be practiced while using carboplatin. carboplatin may harm the baby if used during pregnancy. Tell the doctor immediately if you become pregnant while using this drug. This drug should only be used during pregnancy if potential benefits clearly outweigh risks.

Carboplatin and Breast-feeding: It is not known whether carboplatin is excreted in breast milk. Because of the risks associated with this drug, a decision should be made to cease breast-feeding or discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the medication to the mother.

What other drugs could interact with carboplatin?

The following medications may affect how carboplatin works or increase the risk of side effects:
amphotericin B
azathioprine
colchicine
flucytosine
ganciclovir
gentamicin
tobramycin
interferon
plicamycin
other cancer drugs
zidovudine
Carboplatin may affect how the following medications work, or increase side effects:

phenytoin
vaccines
If you are taking any of these medications, speak with your doctor or pharmacist. Depending on your specific circumstances, your doctor may want you to:

stop taking one of the medications,
change one of the medications to another,
change how you are taking one or both of the medications, or
leave everything as is.
An interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. In many cases, interactions are intended or are managed by close monitoring. Speak to your doctor about how any drug interactions are being managed or should be managed.

Medications other than those listed above may interact with carboplatin. Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter (non-prescription), and herbal medications that you are taking. Also tell them about any supplements you take. Since caffeine, decongestants, alcohol, the nicotine from cigarettes, or street drugs can affect the action of many medications, you should let your prescriber know if you use them.
