Xylocaine General Information
Xylocaine is found in topical jelly form and in the form of an injectable solution. The jelly form of the medicine is found in strength of 2%. The jelly is sterile in nature and made from a local anesthetic. The active ingredient used in Xylocaine is: lidocaine HCl, which is chemically represented as: acetamide, 2-(diethylamino)-N-(2, 6-dimethylphenyl)-, monohydrochloride. The nonmedical ingredient used in Xyloclaine is hypromellose.
The blend of these two components result in lubrication required for instrumentation. Other ingredients used in this jelly are: propylparaben, sodium hydroxide, methylparaben, and/or hydrochloric acid for adjusting the pH to 6.0 to 7.0. The jelly comes in tubes of 5 ml and 30 ml. Every ml of the medication contains lidocaine HCl of 20 mg. The injectable solution is meant for intravenous use. It is available in ampoules of 5ml. The ampoules must be stored at a temperature of 15 to 30 degree Celsius. Other than the active ingredient of lidocaine HCl, it also contains hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide for adjusting the PH into 5.0 to 7.0. Overdose of this anesthetic agent must be avoided. Due to usage of Xylocaine, a person may suffer from mental and physical dependence. Overdose of the drug may cause problems of the central nervous system.
