Accupril General Information
Accupril (quinapril hydrochloride) is used to treat various conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels. It is classed with a group of drugs known as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors). Purchase of Accupril requires a medical prescription. Accupril is most often prescribed to control high blood pressure (hypertension) or to relieve symptoms of congestive heart failure. In some instances, it may be recommended as a treatment option for other medical conditions. Although, Accupril cannot cure high blood pressure it has been proven to considerably reduce blood pressure. Accupril causes the blood vessels to relax, thus lowering blood pressure. If left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to kidney failure, heart attacks, and congestive heart failure. Congestive heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to pump enough blood throughout the body. The use of Accupril decreases blood pressure, thus allowing more blood to be pumped from the heart. As the hearts function is increased, symptoms of congestive heart failure such as breathing difficulties, fatigue, and swelling are decreased. Occasionally, Accupril is prescribed for treatment of kidney disorders in people with scleroderma, a hardening and thickening of the skin. Accupril has not been approved for treating children with blood pressure conditions or congestive heart failure.
