Fosamax General Information
Fosamax is used to treat osteoporosis in both men and women due to steroid medications such as prednisone. It is also used to treat and stop occurrence of osteoporosis in women in their postmenopausal phase as well as treating Paget's disease in men and women. Fosamax is chemically designated to be: (4-amino-1-hydroxybutylidene) bisphosphonic acid monosodium salt trihydrate. Empirical formula of its active ingredient alendronate sodium comes as: C4H12NNaO7P23H2O and it has a molecular weight of 325.12. Fosamax is a powder of non hygroscopic and crystalline texture and it is white in color. It is water soluble, faintly soluble within alcohol, and largely insoluble within chloroform. This drug is supplied in form of tablets and oral solution in the market. The doses should be strictly according to the doctor. Usually, this drug is consumed 30 minutes before the meal. Patients allergic to any of the ingredients on the label should not consume this drug. Fosamax is available in different strengths in the market. Pregnant women and nursing mothers should inform the healthcare provider to avoid any future complications.
