Paxil General Information 

Paxil (paroxetine) belongs to a group of medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI).  These medicines are employed as a measure of improving mood problems.  Paxil works to restore the balance of serotonin in the brain.

Paxil can treat many disorders including anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Side effects do occur with the use of Paxil, some will be worse than others, although not all users will experience a reaction to the drug.  If you experience any type of reaction to Paxil, contact your doctor.  If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, discuss the use of Paxil with your health care provider. 

Paxil may cause heart defects or life-threatening lung problems in newborn babies of mothers using the drug.  Nursing mothers should speak with their doctor concerning the effect Paxil could have on their baby.  Do not stop taking Paxil without first contacting your doctor.

Regular medical visits will be required during the first twelve weeks of treatment with Paxil.  Changes in medicine dosage may be made during that period. 

Some medications may interact with Paxil.  Therefore, it is crucial to inform your doctor of any drug allergies you may have, in addition to providing a complete list of other medicines you are currently taking.  The list should include prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and herbal products.
