Betadine General Information

Betadine is an antiseptic solution and is extremely effective in treating any infections. It is used to destroy the germs and it is also used to treat wounds. Each 1 mL contains 100 mg povidone-iodine, equivalent to 10 mg available iodine. It is also available over the counter, but it is still recommended to seek help from a medical professional before the use. PVP-I in this antiseptic solution is wholly soluble in ethyl alcohol, cold water, polyethylene glycol, glycerol and isopropyl alcohol. The stability of Betadine in a solution is greater compared to the stability of Lugol's solution or tincture of iodine. Free iodine that slowly liberates from povidone-iodine solution or Betadine kills the prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells by iodination of the lipids, oxidation of the cytoplasmic compounds and membrane compounds. Betadine is available in various forms in the market such as, cream, ointment, solution, oral solution and so on. Doses should not be increased or decreased without the permission of the healthcare provider. Patients allergic to iodine or any other ingredients present in Betadine solution or cream should strictly avoid this medication. Patients suffering from Pain or burning sensation, Redness of skin, Hives or blisters, Swellings and so on should notify the doctor. This medicine should be stored at a room temperature away from heat, light and moisture.
