Conditions Xylocaine Treats
Xylocaine is used as a local or regional anesthesia. This medication is generally injected percutaneously or intravenously to numb the specific area of the body. This medication works by blocking the peripheral nerves. Peripheral nerve blocking techniques include intercostal & brachial plexus. Central neural techniques such as caudal epidural and lumbar blocks are also involved in the mechanism.
The topical forms of Xylocaine are also used to relieve pain, burning and itching due to skin inflammations. Fast voltage gated sodium (Na+) channels in the cell membrane of a neuron are responsible for the transferring of information to the brain. This medication alters the propagation of these messages through the neurons by blocking the fast voltage gated sodium (Na+) channels. This causes the neuron not to send the messages to the brain about the pain or burning stimuli. This prevents the propagation of not only the pain signals to the brain, but it also inhibits the signals from the starting position. This medication has also shown to be effective in the treatment of refractory cases or status epilepticus. The intravenous injections of this medication are also effective for the treatment of ventricular arrhythmias. Jellyfish stings can be also treated with this medication. It numbs the affected area and prevents the discharge of nematocyst.
