Conditions Aerius Treats
Aerius is used for the treatment of allergies. It belongs to a class of medications called antihistamines. Allergies occur when the body is extremely sensitive to a particular trigger, called an allergen. Common allergens include dust, dander, mites, mold spores, pollen. When the body is exposed to these allergens, it triggers an immune response, wherein the body produces large amounts of immunoglobin called IgE antibodies. These antibodies trigger the release of histamine from the mast cells. This in turn results in an allergic response characterized by symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, watery eyes. In the case of skin allergies, there may be redness, rashes and itching. There are many different forms of allergies like allergic rhinitis, allergic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and urticaria. Allergic rhinitis refers to general allergy triggered by allergens. It may be seasonal or perennial. Contact dermatitis can be caused due to exposure to some plants, cosmetics; medication; urticaria or hives can be triggered by foods like nuts, berries, shellfish or medications like aspirin or penicillin. Severe allergic reactions can result in breathing trouble, loss of consciousness, low blood pressure, swelling in the lips and joints, chest pain. Antihistamines like Aerius work by blocking the action of histamine in the body. This eases the characteristic symptoms of allergy. Aerius should be taken as prescribed by the doctor.
