Efudex General Information
Efudex is a topical solution or cream, which contains fluorinated pyrimidine 5-fluorouracil, an antineoplastic antimetabolite. Efudex Solution is made from 2 or 5% of fluorouracil on basis of weight/weight, compounded along with tris aminomethane, propylene glycol, parabens, disodium edetate and hydroxypropyl cellulose. Efudex is chemically designated as 5-fluoro-2, 4(1H, 3H)-pyrimidinedione. It is a crystalline and white colored powder and is water soluble. It is also partly alcohol soluble. The molecular weight of 5-fluorouracil comes as: 130.08 and 1 gm fluorouracil can be blended well with 100mL propylene glycol. This medication is used to treat scaly skin or actinic or solar keratoses and it is also used to treat superficial basal cell carcinoma. It is strictly recommended to consult a doctor before consuming this medication. Usually, this solution or cream is applied twice daily in an amount sufficient to cover the lesions. This drug should not be applied to the mucous membrane to avoid ulceration and local inflammation. Patients allergic to any of the ingredients on the label should discontinue taking this drug. Cases such as pregnancies and nursing should inform the doctor. Patients suffering from dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) enzyme deficiency should strictly avoid this drug. Efudex is available in form of cream and solution in the market. This medication should be stored at 25°C (77°F); excursions permitted to 15°C - 30°C (59°F - 86°F).
