Vigabatrin General Information
Vigabatrin is categorized as an antiepileptic. It functions via inhibiting catabolism of GABA or gamma-Aminobutyric acid by permanently inhibiting the GABA transaminase. Its molecular formula is C6H11NO2. The molecular weight of this medication is 129.157 g/mol. Vigabatrin can also be referred to as an irreversible inhibitor of gamma- aminobutyric acid transaminase (GABA-T).
It is the enzyme that promotes inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) catabolism in the brain. The medication should be taken orally exactly as prescribed. Usually, once or twice daily prescription is given to the patient. Best results can be obtained only if Vigabatrin is taken at same time during the day. This will maintain an even level of drug in the body. Vigabatrin can be taken before or after meals. Strictly avoid increasing or decreasing the dose without consulting a health practitioner. It is also not advised to stop taking the drug suddenly without the approval of doctor. You need to inform your doctor about a history of nervous/ emotional/mental conditions, allergy, or kidney disease before taking this drug. The medication should not be taken by pregnant or breast feeding women. This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Vigabatrin is available as white to off-white tablet.
