Zetia General Information

Zetia (ezetimibe) is a prescription medicine used to reduce the amount of cholesterol and other sterols the body absorbs from your dietary intake.  Zetia is part of a planned treatment; including a low-fat, low cholesterol diet, exercise, and weight control.  This treatment is prescribed in an effort to reduce the amount of cholesterol.  A daily routine of diet, exercise, and medication must be followed very closely. 

Zetia is also used to treat high blood campesterol and sitosterol and may be used in the treatment of other medical conditions. 

Zetia blocks the absorption of cholesterol that comes from food as it helps lower your cholesterol count. 

Prior to taking Zetia, you should discuss any medical conditions or medications you are currently taking with your doctor.  Some conditions require the dose of Zetia to be adjusted or additional diagnostic testing to be conducted, before you can safely use this medicine.  Some of these conditions include kidney disease, thyroid disorder, or the use of hormones or steroidal medicines. 

If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or breast-feeding an infant; discuss the safety of using Zetia with your doctor prior to use.

In rare instances, cholesterol-lowering medications have been proven to cause a breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure.
