Seroquel General Information
Seroquel (quetiapine) is used as an antipsychotic medicine. It is a prescription drug used to treat adult schizophrenia and may be used for children who are at lease thirteen years old. Seroquel is also used in the treatment of bipolar disorder (manic depression) in adults. It is approved for use in the treatment of children who are at least ten years old.
Seroquel changes the actions of chemicals in the brain. When used with antidepressant drugs, it is useful in the treatment of adult depressive disorders. Health care professionals may prescribe Seroquel for other medical conditions.
Some psychotic conditions cannot be treated with Seroquel. Older adults suffering from dementia may experience life-threatening conditions with the use of this drug. Younger patients, especially if younger than twenty-four years old may experience suicidal thoughts when they first start taking antidepressant medications.
Regular medical visits are generally required during the first few months of taking Seroquel. Mood changes may occur with this medication and should be reported to your doctor. Family members or caregivers should be aware of any changes in behavior or mood swings related to the use of Seroquel.
Before taking Seroquel, notify your doctor of any other medical conditions; especially epilepsy, heart disease, kidney or liver disease, high blood pressure, and thyroid disorders. Dosage adjustments and/or laboratory testing may be needed to assure safe use of Seroquel.
