Lamictal General Information
Lamictal is used to treat bipolar disorder and epilepsy, by affecting sodium channels in the brain. This drug is available in form of tablets in the market. It is chemically unrelated to existing AEDs.
This drug is chemically described as 3, 5-diamino-6-(2, 3-dichlorophenyl)-as-triazine. It has a molecular formula of: C9H7N5Cl2 and a molecular weight of 256.09. Lamotrigine, the active ingredient of Lamictal is a white to faint cream powder.
Lamotrigine is faintly water soluble (0.17 mg/mL when at room temperature of around 25°C) and partially soluble into 0.1 M HCl (4.1mg/mL when at room temperature of 25°C). Each tablet of Lamictal contains the labeled amount of Lamotrigine along with the following inactive agents: magnesium stearate; lactose; microcrystalline cellulose; sodium starch glycolate; povidone; FD&C Yellow No6 Lake (in 100mg tablet only); ferric oxide, yellow (in 150mg tablet only); and FD&C Blue No2 Lake (in 200mg tablet only). This drug is extremely effective in partial seizures; primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures, generalized seizures of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Doses should be according to the doctor. Patients allergic to any of the ingredients on the label should not use this drug. Patients suffering from Liver diseases, Kidney diseases, Heart diseases and allergies to food, preservatives and dyes should inform the doctor. This drug should be stored at 25°C of controlled room temperature.
