Novolin General Information
Novolin is a human insulin injection. It is manufactured by Novo Nordisk. It is used for the treatment of type1 and even for type2 diabetes. There are two forms of Novolin- Novolin R and Novloin N. Novolin R is regular insulin whereas Novolin N is intermediate acting insulin whose effect last for longer than regular insulin.
Novolin is recombinant human insulin that is produced in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It has empirical formula C257H383N65O77S6 and a molecular weight of 5808 Da. Novolin R comes in the form of a clear, colorless solution. In addition to insulin, it also contains glycerin, metacresol and zinc chloride. Novolin N comes in the form of a cloudy suspension. Sometimes, your doctor may recommend using Novolin N and Novolin R in combination. It has to be injected subcutaneously. Injecting the medication supplements the body’s insulin production which may be inefficient or insufficient.
The dose and timing of the medication will be determined by your doctor based on the extent of your disease. You must eat a meal within 30 minutes of the injection or you will be at risk of hypoglycemia. It is essential to be aware of the signs of hypoglycemia like confusion, sweating, headache, nausea.
