How to Take Novolin
Novolin R is regular human insulin produced by recombinant DNA technology. It comes in the form of a clear, colorless solution. The medication has to be injected subcutaneously in dosages prescribed by the doctor. The dose will be determined based on the extent of diabetes and body weight. On average the daily insulin dosage for maintenance therapy in people with type 1 diabetes is 0.5 to 1.0 IU/kg. In people with type 2 diabetes, the dosage is lower. It is usually around 0.2 to 0.4 IU/kg /day. The injection has to be administered subcutaneously in the thigh, abdominal wall, upper arm or gluteal region.
Novolin R can be administered intravenously in people with severe hyperglycemia. During IV administration, it is essential to keep a close watch of the body’s glucose and potassium levels. The strength of the infusion used for administration is 0.05 U/mL to 1.0 U/mL. Novolin N comes in the form of a cloudy suspension. It has to be rolled in the palm to suspend the medication evenly in the solution. Novolin N may have to be administered once or twice per day depending on the patient’s condition. Novolin N can be used in combination with Novolin R. It is best to combine medication with diet modification and a good exercise regimen for the best results.
