How to Take Synthroid
Synthroid, like all prescription medicines should be taken exactly as prescribed by your health care professional. Always follow the directions listed on the prescription label and do not alter the doctor’s recommendation in any way. Change in dosage amount or length of time taken may occasionally be modified by your doctor to insure you receive the full benefit of the medicine.
Synthroid is generally taken in the morning. Take on an empty stomach thirty minutes prior to eating, with eight ounces of water. It can dissolve very quickly and swell in the throat. This may cause choking or gagging. Synthroid should be taken at the same time every day.
Your body may take a number of weeks to respond to Synthroid. Although, you may feel better, your body will still be unable to produce the thyroid hormone. You will need to depend upon Synthroid to replace the hormone, making it necessary to take medication for the rest of your life.
You will need to undergo blood testing to ensure the Synthroid is controlling your condition. Your doctor may recommend regular testing of kidney and liver function.
If you miss a dose, take one as soon as possible, or if almost time for the next scheduled dose, take that one. Do not try to make up the missed dose. If you take an overdose, seek emergency medical help at once.
