Vetmedin General Information

Vetmedin is a veterinary prescription medicine used to open blood vessels to the heart, thus reducing pressure and stress on this organ.  In essence, the use of Vetmedin allows the heart muscles to pump with more efficiency.  It has been proven effective in the treatment of heart failure due to atrioventricular valvular insufficiency (AVVI) or dilated cardiomyopathy.

Vetmedin is available in a chewable form that can be given to dogs six months or older who are diagnosed with mild to severe congestive heart failure.  Dogs diagnosed with congestive heart failure usually tire easily, cough excessively and show signs such as shortness of breath.  Their legs may appear puffy and swollen and their abdomen may become enlarged due to an accumulation of fluid.  Dogs receiving Vetmedin generally enjoy a longer, improved quality of life.  Vetmedin is approved for canine use only.

Other drugs such as Furosemide, Enalapril, and Spironolactone may be used in conjunction with Vetmedin to lessen the symptoms of congestive heart failure.  The severity of a patient’s heart condition will determine how well a dog will respond to treatment with Vetmedin.  Congestive heart failure, although usually not curable is treatable.

Under normal circumstances, improvement can be seen approximately seven days after starting Vetmedin treatment.  Vetmedin is generally a very cost-effective method of treating congestive heart failure.
